TRADITION AND PASSION
The relation between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, between people and viticulture, is an essential part of the history of this peculiar region named Friuli Venezia Giulia
A TRADITION THAT NEVER ENDEDCARLO'S STORY
Poderi di Carlo™ wines are named after our ancestor Carlo – or Charles –, a wine connoisseur who, in the late nineteenth century, used to travel the hills of Friuli Venezia Giulia region with his horse-drawn cart, select the best wines, and bring them to Vienna, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Even then, the wines from Friuli Venezia Giulia were known and appreciated well beyond the local boundaries, thanks to the Abuia Brothers distribution, based in Graz (Austria). These wines were enjoyed by emperors and noblemen.
BETWEEN COLLIO AND GRAVEPODERI DI CARLO™ WINES
Even without modern technology and machinery for viticulture, our ancestors knew how to choose with absolute precision the hills, slopes and plots more suitable to make the most of different types of grapes. Carlo was able to find the wines that best represented the tradition of viticulture in the Collio territory in all its facets.
The work begun by Carlo on the hills of the Collio, today takes a regional dimension, and includes different DOCs of Friuli Venezia Giulia: Collio DOC, Friuli DOC and Grave DOC: Poderi di Carlo™ represents a selection of the best wines from Friuli Venezia Giulia.
HILLS & HISTORICAL VINEYARDSCOLLIO
The Collio is a DOC area in Friuli Venezia Giulia region, in the Northeast of Italy.
Collio means “hill”, and this name is attributed to an area with a landscape of considerable interest, extending across hills and high grounds marked by a series of ordered rows of vines.
Sand & StoneFRIULI GRAVE
Friuli Grave is an area situated in the heart of Friuli Venezia Giulia, covering the plains of several rivers, the most important of which is Tagliamento. The entire plain is made of alluvial and pebbly soils with large deposits of sand and stones that allow an excellent drainage, helpful in mitigating the effect of heavy rainfalls.
PASSION FOR WINEA SUSTAINABLE APPROACH
Our passion for wine comes from afar, it has been transmitted through generations. In the years we became increasingly conscious of the importance to preserve our heritage but also our land and our knowledge.
Our deep roots push us to establish first of all a sincere and pure relationship with our land, a resource that is fundamental not only for our generation but needs to be preserved also for the future.
We dedicate attention, persistence and studies to understand the vine, support the peculiarities of the climate and keep up with the evolution of wine while respecting its identity. We believe that in order to pursue our goal, to preserve our values while being sustainable and looking at the future, the introduction of advanced technology plays a key role.
Poderi di Carlo™ vineyards are cultivated with techniques of precision viticulture, that allow us to monitor the needs of the vines, targeting specific actions to be taken in particular areas of the vineyard in order to achieve a rational and sustainable vine-growing.
Our approach includes:
Low yield of grapes per hectare, thanks to modern vine training system (Guyot and cordon-spur)
Green manure, fundamental to naturally reintegrate enriching substances in the soil
SQNPI certification which requires Exclusive usage of organic fertilizers
Use of beneficial insects, introducing them in the vineyard, to fight naturally malicious bugs;
Use of drones and satellites to study the geomorphology of the soil in order to address specific needs in different areas of the vineyard;
Use of GPS systems that allow tractors to be self-driven in order to reach the highest possible precision.
Poderi di Carlo™ wines tell the story of a land and its people. These wines embody small parcels of land with special characteristics, expression of a unique territory called Friuli Venezia Giulia.
